Many customers like to know about the company and people behind the products they buy. Here we will tell you a little about ourselves and our company.

Our Business Philosophy

The objective of our business is to provide a high quality product and reliable service for our customers. This year our emphasis is on the environmnet and reducing our carbon footprint.  We are providing produce to the community through sustainable agriculture.  Our products are more eco-friendly. We hope you will enjoy visiting our web site and using our products as much as we enjoyed providing them for you.

Sweetwilliam Farm has expanded its farming operation since the 2008 season while being environmentally conscious.  We are taking organic growing to a new level, sustainable agriculture.  This year, no fertilizers will be purchased for our growing fields; we will be utilizing our horses and chickens to do the dirty work.  Our produce and egg business has expanded this year to include restaurants, local super markets, as well as taking on CSA members. Also new is a wonderful three season green house!

Think Green, Buy Local: Local food production eliminates the environmental damage that is caused by the long-distance transportation that underlies our modern agricultural system. For consumers, the choice to spend money on locally produced foods creates an economic incentive to farmers and landowners to keep land in agricultural production, and thereby preserve open space. Researchers have found that fresh produce is more nutritious than that which has been harvested weeks or months prior to eating.

Honors

Sweetwilliam Farm is the 2004 thru 2009 recipient of the "Horse Farm of Distinction" (HFD) award.   There are over 20,000 horses in MA and about 500 licensed stables; this number doesn't include boarding facilities.  This HFD is available to any member of the Farm Bureau who is in good standing.  Members are judged on eleven different subjects and must achieve a certain level of excellence in horse health management, farm management, and public standards and compliance. Sweetwilliam Farm is one of eight farms in Worcester County to win this prestigious award.

History

In 1993 Gail Harrington became the farm's third owner.  The farm is named after Sweetwilliam, a rescued Arabian horse, who still thrives on the farm with 4 other horses and 3 donkeys.  Historically the land was acquired from Westborough when our town was incorporated and purchased by Ephraim and Thankful (Harrington) Whitney, in 1749.  Legend states that Eli Whitney walked the two miles from Westborough to work on his uncle's farm.  Eli was the inventor of the Cotton Gin.

In the fall of 2002, Gail's son Rob & wife, Caroline moved home to assist with the farm.  Sweetwilliam Farm Country Store was founded by Gail, Rob & Caroline in 2003 and is located on the Farm property.  Rob now manages the farming operations, while Caroline runs the Country Store.
